Fall into a collage of moments the “RECORDING” light was on (& we probably didn’t know)

Tone: Sonic collage. Uncut & Unfiltered. Mosaic ‘Home movie’ in tape-like form.
This record might be the funniest one I’ve ever made.
I didn’t exactly make it.
It happened. And “Record” never stopped…
“RECORD ON, the GO!” is part audio scrapbook, part field recording, part soul souvenir.
It’s the only album that exists as both my most intentional and least architected work. It lives in four layered meanings:
- A record on the go: woven by moments in motion & time.
- A command: “Record on—Go!” A call to preserve what’s fleeting.
- A lifestyle: like throwing on a vinyl that soundtracks wherever you’re heading.
- An audio receipt: a poetic life scored by lucky hits of the red light—recordings we didn’t know were being made, but somehow mattered.
This project is the B-side “home movie” to my whole catalog. If Melanin x RocksTar is the fast-lane grand prix, this is the backseat camcorder. Playing like a fly-on-the-wall documentary of Justis—not the artist, but the human—narrated when the red light blinks, and life rolls.
It began with a [visual] seed: Videos. Moments caught on camera/audio revealing hidden magical moments of an artist-on-the-go. I never loved seeing myself on camera, but when I stripped the visuals to hear raw sounds converted to MP3s, moments became timeless—An “on-the-go” mosaic of overlooked, developmental, and delightfully unpolished gems. Fragments of joy, riff, sketch, verse, or voice memo, that though unpolished, somehow echo louder now.
It’s a melting pot of rock, grunge, jazz, soul, acoustic, hip-hop. But it’s less about genre than texture. Snippets of laughter and open mic slots cut between field recordings. Snippets of my voice decorate and my guitar, like a sidekick—sometimes soloing, sometimes just vibing in the background.
How 2 [STREAM] a teaser of “RECORD ON, the Go!” Vol. 1 ?????
This one plays best in motion “on-the-go.” Tyler, the Creator recently said “Don’t Tap the Glass” is for listening while moving—and this is in that lineage. Except here, the motion isn’t just for you—it’s in the record itself. You hear the going. You feel the going. And if you’re still… it’ll take you with me where I came from too.
This album is for those moments—the liminal spaces where “GO!” happens and “Record(s)” begins.
P.S. I’m always on the go, so new *recordings* added monthly!
Justis’ standout ‘quotes’:
“That’s not even the melody I was going to give you… it slaps though… but this one’s better. Check it!” ~ from Justis, somewhere on the go
“Oooh. My boys got skills, dude…” from Some drunk guy, somewhere on the go
“I don’t even know where this is going… I only have one thing in this whole 16, but let’s see… *laughs*” ~ from a song concept that never came to be*
